That having been said, we just signed him up for a week long sleep-away camp that is designed for deaf and hard of hearing children only. As a Mom, and with Anthony only having been away from me 2 or 3 nights his entire life, it is so unnerving, but I know that it will be a wonderful experience for him. I had to think back to last summer when I sent his older sister to Europe for 10 days on a school trip, it was horrifying, but she loved it and came back a much better person. So, upon researching the camp, it made my decision so much easier.
They offer a total communication option which is exactly what Anthony needs to be successful. Anthony is adorable yes, but his heart and caring for others knows no bounds. Upon asking him if he wanted to go to this camp, the first thing he said was, "Mom, but that costs a lot of money!". I told him that it was perfectly fine, that we would pay for him to go. He was so excited about going and then I got to drop the biggest part of the surprise on him which is that his not only one, but two best friends from school are getting to go to camp as well! He jumped up and down screaming with happiness and then said "THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU"!! It was a wonderful moment for not only him but us as well to be able to give him something that is just for him. Having 3 other kids in the mix is sometimes hard to juggle, especially when he is the only deaf child that we have. He sometimes gets jealous of what they are "allowed" to do that he can not. So even though the camp is so far away from our home, it will be worth the trip to see him happy!
Thanks for reading and more updates soon! Have a happy day!
